Garden designer Michael John McGarr and his business partner Robert Warnes have won the gold award for their show garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live, as well as the Best Construction award. They were presented with their prize at the award ceremony by prestigious garden designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin.
The garden is called Eat and Shelter and showcases the team’s signature contemporary kitchen dining garden, ideal for anyone who enjoys an al fresco get together. The design was created by Michael, with the construction meticulously put in place by Robert.
The Wigan duo have been trading under the name MJM Landscape, but are currently undergoing a business re-launch as Warnes McGarr & Co to reflect their new direction.
Eat and Shelter combines contemporary planting with plenty of texture from grasses and tall flowering plants, with a top-of-the-range Alfa pizza oven and fire table. Edible planting such as thyme, rosemary, fennel and chives means diners can simply pick herb and salads straight from the garden to add onto their meal.
A contemporary steel pergola clearly defines the outdoor kitchen and eating area within the garden. The garden also includes mini-insect hotels within the fencing as well as hedgehog passes.
Michael said: “We were absolutely thrilled to win the gold award within the APL show gardens as well as the Best Construction. This garden represents our passion for creating usable gardens for relaxing, eating and simply living outdoors, while still ensuring nature can live harmoniously alongside us.
“This is just the beginning of our exhibition gardens this year. We’re moving straight into RHS Tatton in a couple of weeks, and then looking at RHS Chelsea for next year. We’re not planning on stopping!”
Robert said: “I was over the moon to find out our build won the Best Construction award, as well as the gold award for the show garden. Our team has worked unbelievably hard from the initial foundation building, right through to checking every single little detail is perfect, ready for when the first visitors arrived.”
Looking to the future, Warnes McGarr & Co will continue to develop their niche in outdoor living gardens and edible planting, combined with a design that provides ecological harmony.
BBC Gardeners World Live takes place this weekend at the NEC in Birmingham (June 16 – 19).
Michael and Robert recently won a commendation from the APL awards for their outstanding garden design for a residential garden in Hawkley, in the ‘Gardens under £20,000’ category.
This award followed hot on the heels of the silver medal gained at the RHS Tatton Show last year. Michael and Robert are exhibiting a garden at this year’s RHS Tatton show in July called From hall to home, which charts the evolution of the modern garden through the development of stately homes.
