Melissa Morton Garden Design draws on a developed process and a technical background to create elegant gardens that work beautifully.

Planting really makes a garden. Whatever the maintenance level desired, we believe integrating creative planting is essential to the spatial design of outdoor spaces and is considered early on in our design process. As well as offering the opportunity to screen or frame views naturally, plants help to define the character and style of a garden as well as making such a positive contribution to biodiversity and the environment.

Nestled in the Wharfe valley and surrounded by moorland, our studio in the spa town of Ilkley provides a complete landscape design to construction service including comprehensive design plans. We can supply one element of the design process, eg concept plans for clients to pursue independently. We can also provide planting designs with plant supply.

We design elegant outdoor spaces, creating something truly special and appreciated inside and out.

Melissa Morton Garden & Landscape Design will guide and advise you on the best way to evolve your garden design project, tailoring our advice to deliver an elegant garden which works beautifully for you.

New build garden transformation

The clients, a young professional couple owning their first home, wanted to create their dream garden to enjoy for years to come. Looking to create an informal / cottagey look that would blend with their more modern house, their wish list included a good sized seating / dining area, a generous lawn, somewhere to grow fruit & veg and softening overlooking properties.

What our customers are saying

We had taken the usual scattergun approach to planting which provided only limited impact. The garden is now much more structured, interesting and easier to maintain. We can already see the benefit of planting in drifts with a theme, rather than individual plants. Melissa listened to what we wanted to achieve from the garden and delivered on the brief.

We enjoy working with the high quality materials that Melissa has helped the client to select. There is nothing more satisfying for a contractor working with quality materials that you know are going to last well for the client. We enjoy working with Melissa because she is passionate about what she does. She is an excellent communicator. When minor problems arise, or when adjustments are needed, Melissa is sure to communicate these with us. This really helps us to feel part of the job more and so we are in turn more passionate about the build. From our general experience, garden design drawings can sometimes be difficult to understand and work from. But this is not the case when working with Melissa Morton Garden Design. Their designs and technical drawings are very clear and easy-to-understand. This ensures the setting out and subsequent build very straight forward. The areas and spaces are well-designed making the projects enjoyable to work on, as well as satisfying when the project is completed.

L Pickering, Landscape Contractor (First Light), Leeds, Yorkshire

The concept by Melissa Morton Garden Design enabled us to make better decisions about the design and layout of the house extension, and this gave us the biggest improvement to our home renovation. It ensured both areas (inside and out) were connected in the best possible way. This was best achieved by the early engagement, as Melissa came up with a few clever ideas – particularly on changing the entrance into the garden which ended up dictating the design of the extension. The design process helped us to achieve this and sufficed, as we have a long-term relationship with the landscape contractor who was able to interpret the concept. Melissa was very flexible in her approach.

We now have a garden that we can use all year round and which looks great! It is the part of the home we like the most, rather than an empty source of frustration. Melissa is good at challenging the ideas we suggested and offering alternatives to make sure that we are certain of the path chosen and then incorporated this into the design and maintenance plan. She has fulfilled our vision for what the garden could be. It was worth doing the detailed design and planning as the landscapers were pleased to have that level of detail to work with. Also having you as project manager and liaise with the landscapers meant that issues could be dealt with directly as they occurred rather than through us, which would have added delay and removed expertise from the equation. You took our detailed brief and list of ideas and helped to realise this in a structured way, especially regarding the transitions between zones and the issues we had with our boundaries. Painting the fence, even when we were still months off from the build (on your suggestion) made a real difference in how we felt about the garden and gave us a a good ‘quick win’ and helped us to realise what a transformation it was going to be! Your planting design has given us structure and cohesion that simply “works” within which we have the confidence (after your coaching) to experiment and learn. Thank you Melissa!
