Concept design for Harrogate Spring Show by Melissa Morton Garden Design
Small garden design using golden section principle, with bespoke pergola and Urbis water bowl

‘Garden for Gathering’ was designed as the APL show garden at Harrogate Spring Show 2025 as a welcoming retreat for a retired homeowner, where family and friends can come together to create lasting memories.
Thoughtfully arranged, the west-facing garden enjoys the warmth of the afternoon and evening sun, blending relaxation with nature in a beautifully balanced space. The garden was awarded 'Premier Gold' and 'Best in Show'.
A bespoke asymmetric corner pergola provides a cosy lounge area for unwinding and eating whilst enjoying views of the garden. The water bowl adds tranquillity and attracting wildlife to dip in. Nearby, a swing seat invites visitors to enjoy.
Beyond bringing people together, the garden also celebrates the joy of gathering homegrown flowers and edibles. This offers the opportunity of intergenerational connections as grandparents pass on their knowledge of growing plants.
The spatial design is underpinned by the Golden Section, a timeless geometric principle that enhances balance, harmony, and flow. This approach maximises the sense of space in a small garden, creating a natural rhythm that draws the eye and enriches the user experience. The result is a garden that feels both open and inviting, where every element works together to create beauty, functionality, and a deep connection to nature.
